Amanda Gorman becomes just the sixth poet, and by far the youngest, to recite their poem at a Presidential inauguration at 22 years old.

The self-described skinny black girl who descended from slaves and was raised by a single mother, who dreamed of being President, was now not only reciting her poetry for one but also for an entire nation.

Joe Biden became just the fourth President — all Democrat, coincidentally, to have an inaugural poem read. At a time when many would agree that our country could use some inspiring poetry, Biden selected by far the youngest poet to grace the inauguration stage.

Thanks to a request by First Lady Jill Biden, 22 year old Amanda Gorman recited her rousing poem, “The Hill We Climb.” The young Gorman joined esteemed poets such as Maya Angelou and Robert Frost as part of a most selective group to ever grace the inauguration stage. The overwhelming consensus by the media and people from both parties is she did not disappoint.

“Now more than ever, the United States needs an inaugural poem,” Gorman told cnbc.com. “Poetry is typically the touchstone that we go back to when we have to remind ourselves of our history that we stand on, and the future that we stand for.”

While most people who are just 22 years old are finishing up college or beginning their journey in corporate America, Gorman spent the previous few weeks crafting a poem she would read before not only the first family, but also…
